Unicorn aggro prevents logout whilst woodcutting magics south of seers bank

I have a question about the game rules. Is it against the rules to use the aggression of a unicorn to prevent logout whilst woodcutting magic trees (south of seers village bank)? I have seen a lot of people doing this for a long time, I’ve been told it has already been clarified as not breaking the rules, but some people also complain that it is - I want to know for sure if I can do it safely without risk of ban.

i believe it was considered cleaver use of game mechanics last time it was questioned. so your fine. it existed back then so it exists now

Confirmed not against the rules

It remains balanced because it’s also not against the rules for another player to kill the mob (but repeated and targeted harassment still is!) and also Random Events will mess up your setup if you entirely ignore the screen.

Thanks for using the Forums to check!

one last question, how would i report someone for that kind of repeated and targeted harassment?

Well, first make sure you’ve done everything you can to disengage or prevent it yourself.

Try just asking them nicely to stop and giving a bit of explanation. Perhaps you can strike a conversation with them and ask why they’re doing this.
If it continues, add the player to your Ignore List and Hop worlds (I promise this doesn’t mean you lose, there’s no defeat in simply moving on to stay on track for your goals/not feeding the trolls).
Should they follow you and continue after all this, it’s a much more significant problem.

At that point, and not before, you can use Encouraging Others To Break Rules and/or send a message to Staff via the Support Centre.

Thanks again for the swift response

Can you point me to the jagex rule that says that griefing is a bannable offense?

See Rules of RuneScape - The RuneScape Wiki && Code of Conduct - OSRS Wiki

Jagex has had harassment/disruptive behavior on the rulebook in one form or another since 2009.

It’s worth noting that Dee didn’t say he’d ban users here for griefing, nor even that he’d ban them for targeted harassment – only that targeted harassment happens to not be within the our rules

Seems we’re overlooking the fact that it wasn’t a rule all the way along until 2009.

What’s the stance on luring?

Thank you Dee for your reply. Clearly, I meant 2004 jagex rule.

Someone perpetrating a targeted harassment campaign against another player could reasonably be seen as breaking rules one and/or nine of the original 2004 ruleset. Not necessarily though. “Targeted harassment” can be difficult to be define. Any such situations are dealt with on a case-by-case basis!

Don’t think we’ve ever run up against this, interestingly luring seems like it’d be pretty clearly against rule two:

But similar to the harassment thing it’s likely to be difficult to define exactly what constitutes deception, so again, case-by-case basis.

Maybe I am missing something here, so help me to understand please!

How is griefing (in this context killing an npc over and over again), breaking either:

Rule1: Offensive language
Rule9: Encouraging others to break rules

Thnx

Luring actually became explicitly against the rules on March 29, 2007

Update:Rule 2 Update - OSRS Wiki

The operative word was “could” – refer also to all the qualifiers about difficult definitions and case-by-case bases.

You’re welcome to continue engaging in bad faith about minutiae but I think you and I both know you’re smarter than that

Ah right, yes, right before they added the Wilderness Ditch in April 2007. Yep, definitely peaked before 2007.

No I can’t, and I didn’t say there was one, so I don’t understand the relevancy of your question.

Save the posturing and go ahead and make the point you’re intending to.

The way dee laid out his message insinuated to me that, yes, griefing someone else, is considered targeted harassment, which branon, speaking for dee, claims it breaks rules 1 and 9. All I am asking for is, how? That is all boys.

Didn’t speak for him, just explained my interpretation of what he said for the room, since your interpretation was purposefully deficient!

Also didn’t claim that! But I’m repeating myself now.

Yellow chat overload my goodness.

Jordan, your perception of my initial response is flawed, despite it being very clear and direct.

I wrote it’s not against the rules to kill the Unicorn (griefing), but repeated/targeted harassment would be. Why does this suggest to you griefing = targeted harassment? That’s clearly not what I said. Actually it’s the opposite of what I said.
Griefing isn’t against the rules, but repeated and targeted griefing is.

What else is unclear or would you like to posit?
