New discord bs rule

To use market I have to have a discord and I don’t have one which is bs. I’m not gonna change something I haven’t used in years for this I’d rather move on. If this is the case and it’s permanent I’ll unfortunately be hanging 2004 up

It is unfortunate that Discord is mandatory when we could integrate an account manager into Discourse accounts. But I get it, it’s now more of a hassle to switch from Discord to Discourse.

Maybe you could use Marketplace subcategory? That way you don’t need to make a Discord account.

The markets is a 3rd party application and not required to play the game whatsoever. I built and host the markets myself because I want to help the players out.

There’s been a bad issue with user impersonations and fake listings. I do not want to sit on the site all day managing them, especially when I’m already spending a ton of my free time developing the site. The server itself has already been requiring Discord login for a month. I understand it’s slightly inconvenient, but once you login one time you never have to login again unless you switch devices.

Not only is the markets 3rd party and not required to play the game, you can still use them. You can find buyers and sellers for items, you’re just not able to post your own listings. If you’re unwilling to login, I guess it’s time to head to w1 varrock bank like andrew gower intended.

Slight correction: Lost City does not require a Discord login. The web sign-up does, but I was able to get a legacy account by direct request to Pazaz.

I understand as a 3rd party you don’t really have a way to cross-check legacy accounts, but I wanted to point out that Discord is not strictly required for the game.

On mobile this isn’t really doable. I play on mobile so it kills the whole trading aspect of the game for me. Tho it’s not required I don’t have a way of efficiently trading now. Just unfortunate

What’s your apprehension about logging in with discord? If you don’t want to use your personal email or discord account, create a random discord account with a random email and you’ll be good to go :man_shrugging: You don’t need to join a discord channel or anything.

It’s a small thing to do if it’s your only way to effectively trade.

I can’t speak for OP, but I gave some arguments in my thread when asking to sign up.

In addition to those arguments against the requirement in the first place, I just don’t want to have a Discord account at all. I don’t agree with their policies or their business model of centralizing communities on their platform. It is frustrating enough trying to find communities that don’t use it, and even moreso when it is required to use a completely unrelated service like 2004scape.

The Discord login creates convenience for site admins like you at the cost of the users’ freedom to associate (or not).

I haven’t had this issue myself but I’ve seen people complaining about not being able to make a Discord account without giving up their phone number.

A phone number is not required.

Discord accounts do need to be verified, but they can be verified by email OR phone number. Verifying the account is as simple as clicking the button it sends to the email.

I don’t want discord. I didn’t like it and never have. I haven’t had it in years even tho most people use it. It’s not for me nor do I wanna download it. I understand where you’re coming from as a dev but I’m not gonna go thru the extra to use that I’ll maybe come back when I get a computer in the future.

We do not use Discord login as a convenience. It is a necessary evil to combat bad actors. Discord login has not been a convenience at all, but it has been very good at preventing mass bot account creation.

Best of luck in-game

There’s no such thing as necessary evil. Anything that is necessary cannot be evil. The convenience is that you get to skip the part where you solve the problem yourself. Discord faces the same issues you face and deals with them. It’s not like Discord has some magic fairy dust that prevents bots and other bad actors that you don’t have access to.

It may not have been convenient for you to implement the integration, but you clearly decided that it was more convenient to do that than to solve the problem yourself.

All that being said, I don’t hold anyone at fault for not wanting to deal with it because these third-party options exist. My real complaint is that there is no choice on the user side. At least on the forum there are options to use GitHub and Google to log in (and I think the forum still has direct sign-up). If there were just more options available, I think you’d see a lot fewer complaints about this.

You’re correct, it saved us many, many, many, many, many hours and lots and lots of money on spam and bot prevention because Discord has already faced the issues.

I hope you remember that the server is entirely open source. Feel free to contribute. We’d be more than happy to remove Discord integration if an in-house solution was developed

We do not support other 3rd party integrations because they don’t have the same level of spam and bot prevention that Discord does. Again, we did not choose Discord because it was the most convenient. We chose it entirely because it’s the best at preventing bad actors from ruining the game.

And thank you for doing it, I love it. It brings more genuine player to player interaction in to the game

No it doesn’t ? lol tf you talking about

Yes it does. Instead of spamming with autotyper in W1 you have to contact buyer/seller
