There are those of us who wish not to use Discord for various reasons. The sign-up page on the main website says to “contact us” if there’s an issue, but I couldn’t find a contact link, so I’m writing here.
I understand your desire not to get overwhelmed with account management stuff. This forum supports signing up with Google and GitHub. Can that be implemented on the main site? And regardless, is there still a way for me to make an account without signing up for Discord?
Great points. Discord aint oldschool and is frankly the antithesis of the spirit of 2004.
There are risks to the users when using third-party auth like this too. If you get banned from Discord, you won’t be able to sign into 2004scape either. The mods may rightly ask “why would someone get banned from Discord, and would we even want them on our game servers?” Fair enough, for now maybe. You never know when there’ll be a hostile corporate takeover or something and people start getting banned for bad reasons, and of course it is still possible for Discord to be the target of a cyberattack that would create issues.
In the case of a hostile takeover, the 2004scape admins could hurriedly provide an alternate solution, but then they have to figure out a way to validate that someone signing up via a new method is the rightful owner of their runescape characters they got locked out of or deal with transfer requests and all the sort of account management headaches they were hoping to avoid by using 3rd party auth.
Again I understand the reason not to want to deal with account management. I think offering multiple options is an okay compromise so users can decide who they trust to be here tomorrow and to have their data. Though really I think direct sign-up should still be an option, even if it is discouraged. Perhaps require people to write in an email asking for an account and talk about their favorite part of runescape as an anti-bot measure. Just an idea.
