Sneak Peek Discussion

@Pazaz Just wanted to say thanks for '04scape and for everything you and the team are doing. The fact that this is a free game and the devs are doing this on their free time is incredible. Any and all updates are appreciated. Keep it up!

Wondering if this list is up to date?

For 2004, yes.
2005 has a couple more later in the year, and a few more map files.

Out of curiosity, I looked through recent finds on RS Archive; were the files for 242, 243, and 268 any good?

I don’t recall seeing 242 or 268. 243 would be June 21, and yes I archived that earlier this year. 268 would be around October.

If they exist, they are probably partial, and/or not uploaded anywhere public.

Of the sources that are 99% and missing a few map pieces. Where are those pieces? Are they all mostly the same areas? Why weren’t they stored in the cache that was uploaded by the finder? Did they not visit the area? Is it a quest area?

The client downloaded things on demand, some things were prefetched to be ready ahead of time, but many things were not. There’s a lot of variables that go into what you could download.
Missing maps are not the same places, usually it means the cache was reconstructed largely from other versions, or the player didn’t travel far enough to experience that content at that time.

Hey Pazaz, is there a guide on recovering the data required from old PCs?

Cheers, I’d imagine the main problem people run into is the hard drive is dead? I go to a lot of car boots here in the UK so i’ll keep an eye out for old workstations and hard drives.

The helpful folks at the RS Archive Project have made a tool tailored for cache retrieval  See the links above, thanks guys.

Sometimes it can also be beneficial to make a full disk image to do data recovery, more time intensive than pulling files. That amount of effort is usually only worth it if it’s been really early on – 2001-2004.

Since the game overwrote itself with the latest version each time you played, there’s no guarantee everyone has something new, but it never hurts to try! We’ve been extra lucky on some versions (e.g. only live for a day or two).

If your drive is dying or dead it can potentially be safer to not blindly plug it in and run the tool, and instead try ddrescue. If it’s completely devoid of life… not usually worth the money to try anything more professional.

Thanks for the heads up and i’ll be on the look out when things come up cheap.

by filling missing map data you mean using map data from another cache to fill the missing one hoping it matches right?, i would say sometimes theres not many diferences between maps however, i noticed the change around the map when we update from march 2004 to july, it was obvious that certain terrains had more bushes and other areas removed also some plants

I would never fill hoping it matches, we can tell that it won’t ā€œmatchā€ by the version table in the cache. It would be misrepresenting history to be that careless.

Taking a different version’s map is a last resort to have anything appear at all. As you’ve seen they can have subtle changes or big graphical differences. Rarely, areas get completely redone, but that’s possible too.

The best I can do when missing maps is to compare an earlier and later map, and try to figure out the exact changes in between.

What are "midi"s
(20 char)

All songs and jingles have a .mid file extension. This stands for MIDI (Musical Instrument Digital Inerface). This contains data about musical notes, timing, volume, and instrument information rather than the actual audio

Those who complain about the rate of rev progression should stop complaining and start coding

Love it! I’m so excited

Not related to what’s currently coming down the pipe but one thing I’m looking forward to in this server is the possibility that dragon platelegs might come out significantly before slayer is released. It’ll be cool to see full dragon and splitbark get to have more of an era than they ended up getting irl.

Maybe it sounds like a nightmare to Pazaz but as a player I’d be more than happy if it took us until 2030 to get to 2006.
