Goldsmith vs cooking gauntlets

I’m wondering what gauntlets im going to choose.

According to the wiki you have a 9% chance of burning sharks at 99 cooking without cooking gauntlets. Shark - OSRS Wiki

While you get the 56,2 xp instead of 22,5 xp per gold bar with the goldsmith gauntlets.

I’m leaning towards picking goldsmith atm since i think smith xp is worth a lot more than cook xp, but i’m not sure what to pick.

What do you guys think?

I’m not planning on using goldsmithing for my primary smithing exp, so for me it’ll be a pair of cooking gauntlets. I considered going with chaos gauntlets for a little while for when metal dragons are added, but I quickly scrapped that idea.

In 2005 you’ll be able to pay 25k to swap gauntlets as well.

Right now, in 2004, both Smithing and Cooking are more arduous to train anyway, but since metal drags are not out yet, Chaos Gauntlets aren’t particularly great either right now.

If I had to choose one right now (didn’t do Family Crest yet), probably Cooking Gauntlets.

I chose cooking. i burn 2-5 sharks every inv at 80! i dont see myself mining gold at all but goldsmith is better longer term unless ytou wanna be a chef. chaos gauntlets look cool for pkers.

I went with Cooking. I’m not planning to get all 99’s in this game, other than combat skills potentially.

I prefer to use death/blood spells (blast, wave, god spells, ancients eventually) over chaos spells (bolt) anyway. So no chaos gauntlets here.

There’s a chance over a long term I’ll get 99 fish/cooking maybe but it would be 2006-2007 already lol. Short term I do want to be able to have 76 fish and 80 cooking, and the gauntlets help reduce the pain (64 cooking of no burn, vs 74 cooking of no burn otherwise).

I can’t fathom a single good reason to level Smithing beyond quest requirements (50). But if it happens it won’t be because I was playing with Gold bars. It’s from making cannon balls or arrow heads / dart tips.

As a high level skiller, this is how I analysed the different gauntlets you can pick. I’ll touch on Chaos too.

Chaos - Back in the F2P era of the server I stopped using damage spells completely once I unlocked high alchemy. I’ve only used alchemy, superheat and telekinetic spells since hitting level 55, so I wouldn’t get use out of these gauntlets. It can be a cheap alternative to killing monsters, but range and melee are just more effective in this current era.

Cooking - A good choice, but not the one I picked personally. I’ll be training fishing and cooking through fly fishing, so I’d only get a use out of these once I’m done with training through cooking sharks. When comparing the burn rate of Sharks with and without Cooking gauntlets at 99 Cooking, there’s only a 9% difference between them, which I think I can do without until we get to the 2005 era.

Goldsmith - My personal choice. This basically unlocks a training method for me which I’ve already gotten plenty of use out of with buying thousands of gold ores, superheating them into gold bars and making jewellery out of them as well as selling the rest at a loss. It’s expensive but skips the slow smelting process.

Because Goldsmith gauntlets unlock a training method for me, whereas cooking gauntlets only add a small upgrade to my Cooking XP/hr post 99 Cooking, I made the decision to pick Goldsmith.

Jiklim’s summary is a good one. It’s a personal choice that comes down to whether you plan to do a lot of shark cooking or want to have access to gold as a smithing training method. Smithing can be trained without it, but it’s one of the best training methods.

What I’ll add here is that you should also consider whether you are more of an afk or high-apm player. Cooking will be fairly high apm as it currently is until after the point where you can pay 25k to change your gauntlets (late 2005). On the other hand, smelting will become afkable later on in 2004. Superheating is more efficient for gold, but smelting will become a pretty good afk option for smithing training after that update. If you want to go for a more afk playstyle, you could choose goldsmith gauntlets, use them for afk smithing, and be able to change them to cooking gauntlets when cooking becomes afkable.
