Rare implementation clarification

“Over the next 4 months starting with the game update on July 12, every weekend all online players eligible will have an incredibly rare chance to obtain a random rare pre-RS2 item by doing any action ingame. There will a minimum playtime and level requirement.”

What timezone? Can we have the probability and is it uniform for all actions? What constitutes an action (e.g. exp drop, moving, emoting, attacking a monster, monster drop, clue scroll completion, quest completion)? What is the playtime requirement? How will we know if we’re past the playtime requirement? What is the level requirement?

Dunno about the other answers, but for these ones, it’s deliberately kept secret

If they’re keeping it secret because “we don’t want people to optimize gameplay for rares” this is going to backfire immediately when the first one is spawned and everyone jumps to doing a single sure thing.

Authentic noob mechanics; RNG doesn’t work like that, but some people might not be aware, so it encourages doing something outside the normal to eventually figure out the actions and reward are random :stuck_out_tongue:

I’ll be bummed if it’s a total level req since I only train 2 skills but I play a lot :l

you missed the part where they said it would be an incredibly rare chance

isn’t the whole thing open source? can’t someone just look through the code for these answers?

Fun fact, the game is licensed under MIT which means you can share the source code, but you’re not forced to (AGPL would force you to). This has allowed 2004scape to add anti-cheat and bot detection code that isn’t on the GitHub repo.

So I would similarly expect this patch to not be open source.

I heard that it was being balanced such that different methods may have different rates, so stuff like Sharks might get a higher chance, which is a really good idea since otherwise the meta is really obvious and frankly sweaty. Instead, in most cases, we can probably do fine just doing whatever we enjoy.

I would hope that the total level and playtime requirements are made public though.
