Have you ever messed with Diablo II closed realms? There’s an entire rabbit hole out there for this, I don’t think it’s quite as deep as the RSPS scene but I also haven’t spent nearly as much time with it.
PvPGN and D2GS are the big names. I don’t think D2GS was ever fully open-sourced, which is a shame, but once upon a time I ran a very small closed realm for some buddies and it worked quite well.

Yeah! I messed with PvPGN-PRO years ago (notes) with Diablo 2 and Warcraft 3. I considered D2GS but figured Open was good enough and didn’t want to involve Wine and other separate stuff.
Come fight me in Act 4 Plains of Despair.
