How many rares is perfect in your mind? I’ll run the numbers and let you know what that looks like as an end result.
an average of 1 rare per active player would be good imo. We are still in the nascent stage of this project. I think it will be around for many years, so I think that’s reasonable.
Sheeesh so if that’s still distributed each weekend then we’d 10x the supply and be at 2-3 rares each player at the end.
Definitely not rare but trade volume would certainly go up lol
Would be 6000+ in circulation if the event suddenly changed rates
Sorry for the ambiguity, I meant 1 per active player by the end of the whole event.
Ah, well in that case our 30 day player count is higher than our weekly. We’d still see 5000+ in total supply
Room to grow and would mimic their availability/abundance in the actual 2004 runescape.
I had in mind something more like 2500 tho. I guess there’s more active players than I thought. So I guess I’d revise my suggestion to 0.5 per active player.
Yeah, but if the event transitioned into “just log in” we’d have more people come on briefly + alts and it would exceed the 7 day active player count by a lot.
I read a recap once that 2004 RS had ~33k rares combined in supply, for their millions of players. Our ratio would certainly be closer to year 1 of OSRS…
I think those numbers would be fine. 12% of the active playerbase having a rare by the end of this event seems really low to me. A year from then it would probably be less than half, then less than half again the following year. I don’t want to see rares become nearly extinct after a couple years. I’d probably aim for 3-4x the current rates.
If the event suddenly…
Lol
Thanks for engaging with us on this. I’m not the best numbers guy. Other ppl would have more insight here. my feedback is just moar rares plox
It’ll be higher than 12%, I just didn’t want to give you guys exact projections.
Yes it could certainly halve if people really don’t care about these preservation updates. Hopefully not!
So you know, I didn’t want it to exceed 20% as an upper bound, and I didn’t want to see it bulk hoarded ASAP so I decided on this distribution method. RNG take the wheel!
You may have already been asked this, but is there a particular reason you chose a number like 20%? Is the goal to approximate 2004’s rare-to-player ratio?
He can handle 80% of the player base rioting, but 81% is too much
RS player base is always going to be a revolving door. As time goes on, fewer and fewer players from a specific time period will still be playing. People who drift away from the game will more often than not hold on to their rare, meaning that rare effectively disappears. At this rate, a few years down the line I think there will only be one or two active players at any given time with any given rare item. Rare trades will probably only be happening a couple times a month and people will be offering obscene wealth for them.
A rough approximation but yeah, probably a higher ratio than it actually was. If we had more players it would still aim around the same % just more supply.
Here’s a deal, when the event is over I will keep the following cache archival offer up indefinitely:
If you find a new unique cache version you can have a wearable rare of your choice, if you find an existing cache but with previously-missing files inside (like models/music) you can have a non-wearable of your choice.
Of course I have to verify them, but they can still trickle in if you help me save history.
That sounds like the inevitable future of these items regardless (RIP RS3), just accelerated by a lack of supply. The curse of discontinued tradeables.
That’s the kind of stuff I like to hear. Drown us in wearables lol! Find the cache
If it’s helpful, I found a Jagex mod’s reddit thread showing that prices of phats in July 2004 were much lower than they are here at the moment, 3m-9m (scroll to the bottom of the image). But I bet you and the historians in this project have a much better memory/source than I do
Oh yeah, I know but look at how much ranger boots go for in that thread vs our markets. Prices are all different across the board pretty much. There’s no matching the economy especially when people know perfect metas to get way more GP/XP, and we lack botted resource inflation.
I didn’t set the current prices (I feel they are much too high. Y’all I can see your banks…) but I understand why the few would capitalize on it. To make/keep them that price we would need to tank the price of everything else before it, and have them very very common.
Have you ever thought of increasing the rates by even like 1-5%? Or is it pretty much set in stone until the end?
